Built on the same platform as its sedan sibling, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV could be considered the default flagship vehicle for Mercedes, offering S-Class levels of luxury with the utility of a 3-row family hauler, wrapped in a fully electric package. But while trying to serve so many different buyers, does it end up not doing any job particularly well? We purchased a EQS450 4Matic EV for our test program, and share our first impression of its range, infotainment system, the usability of the third row, and how it compares to other EV SUVs like the Tesla Model X and BMW iX. We also discuss what happens to a car's telematics and infotainment systems when 3G and 4G service is shut down by wireless carriers. Is Buick Enclave the hidden gem of the large 3-row SUV world? With a resume that includes simple controls, a comfortable ride, and a responsive non-turbo powertrain, there's a case to be made that it deserves serious consideration. We discuss the recent updates to its steering wheel controls, gear selector, and infotainment system for the 2022 model year, and how it performs against competitors like the Infiniti QX60, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Acura MDX, and Hyundai Palisade. Also, what happens when you try to turn off a vehicle while driving? Does it make a difference if it's a traditional key, or a push button start? After being asked the question from a member of our audience, our experts head out onto our test track to find out!

The Slingshot, a three-wheeled street vehicle made by ATV, snowmobile, and side-by-side manufacturer Polaris, blurs the lines between a motorcycle and car. With its single rear drive wheel and an open-air cabin lacking both a roof and doors, the Slingshot positions itself to be an action-packed alternative to weekend cruisers like the Mazda Miata, traditional motorcycles, or any number of classic cars (think Plymouth Barracuda, Road Runner, and Chevrolet Nova). But does the fun factor make up for the price, inconvenience, and lack of safety features?

Nissan draws from its 50-plus-year history in resurrecting the Z, a sports car that the automaker calls "all-new" (but is it though??) We debate the provenance of this iteration of the Z, as well as share our first impressions of its performance, interior, and what you might lose by opting for the automatic transmission. We also debate which is the ultimate driving machine: the BMW M550i xDrive, or the Mercedes-Benz AMG E53.

Subaru jumps into the electric vehicle market with the brand's first widely offered EV, the 2023 Solterra. Sharing its platform with the almost identical Toyota bZ4X, we share our first impressions of this all-electric SUV, including its unique interior design cues, driving characteristics, and power delivery. We also discuss the current state of the semiconductor chip shortage on the car market: why you might see cars selling with a chip shortage discount, whether some manufacturers are dropping options like satellite radio in order to ration the available chips, and if cars from this era will be desirable in the future.

The Ford Maverick hybrid promises superior fuel economy and pickup utility at a price that's thousands of dollars less than the more common standard-sized truck. But will the availability of the hybrid powertrain as front-wheel drive only be a deal-breaker for buyers? Can this small pickup handle truck duties, and how does it compare to the standard engine version? Also, we explain the science behind regenerative braking, and how it works in both hybrid and electric vehicles.

The market for new cars in 2022 is unlike anything that has come before; with lingering chip shortages, supply chain issues, and skyrocketing demand, dealers are selling vehicles for thousands (or more!) over sticker price, and many buyers don't know what to do. Since Consumer Reports purchases every car we test, we have felt the pain as well. In this episode, we recall our recent experiences buying cars for our test program, invite members of our audience to share their car buying stories, and give tips on what you can do to save yourself money if you're in the market for a new car right now.

Consumer Reports recently purchased a 2021 Tesla Model S for our test program, which now features a steering yoke rather than a traditional circular steering wheel. We share our first impressions on what it is like to use this steering input on the highway, in the driveway, and in crowded parking lots. We also discuss the other big changes to this vehicle, including its lack of directional and wiper stalks (now a touch-sensitive button on the yoke), horn placement (also a touch button), and touchscreen/predictive gear shifting mechanism.

This week we share our first impressions of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross; how it drove on our track, its long roster of advanced safety features, and who this small SUV might appeal to. With major flooding affecting many parts of the country, we discuss all the ways water can damage a car, and give tips on how to spot and avoid a waterlogged vehicle when buying a used car. Other topics this week include: what is the difference between a vehicle refresh and redesign; if bright LED daytime running lights can cause drivers to not turn on their car's headlights; why EVs seem to have less space for tall drivers; and how Consumer Reports decides which vehicles to buy for our test program, and what happens to our cars after testing is completed.

We share our first impressions of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, discussing its performance on our track, and how it stacks up to competitors like the Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, and Honda Pilot. We preview the newly announced 2023 Nissan Z, including its highly anticipated 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 engine. Chevrolet has expanded its battery recall on the Bolt EV and EUV models, and what owners should do to stay safe until a fix is available. We also share audience feedback on their "Forever" car choices; whether the rapid speed of improvements will leave current electric vehicle shoppers with outdated battery technology; if that "new car smell" is toxic (and how to get rid of it if it's not for you); the safest way to change wheel sizes on a car; and which Toyota RAV4 is the best choice for a driving enthusiast.

This week we review GM's automated driving enhanced Super Cruise system, tested on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade we purchased for our test program, and discuss how it compares to the previous version, as well as competitors like Tesla's Autopilot. With the arrival of summer and temperatures rising across the US, we share tips on how to keep your family safe and cool your car quickly. We also share how to keep kids occupied during long road trips; whether older, rare cars like the Chevrolet SSR could lack replacement parts as it gets older; what to do to prevent dirt, bugs, and other debris from disabling your car's camera-based safety systems; and how the massive chip shortage might affect the build quality of 2022 model year vehicles.

On this week's episode, we talk about the redesigned 2022 Honda Civic, and share our first impressions on its driving characteristics, styling, and comfort. Ford has announced an all-new small pickup, the Maverick, and we discuss how it might fit into a market dominated by oversized vehicles. We also give a glimpse into our headlight testing at the track, and how halogen lights compare to LEDs. Other topics include why a truck's hood height can pose a risk to pedestrians and drivers of smaller cars; proper oil change intervals for short commutes; whether a new car that sat on a dealer's lot for months may have a risk of 'lot rot;' if turning off the A/C in a car saves gas; and our experts predict which modern cars will become classics in the future.

This week we share our first impressions of the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, and discuss whether its driving dynamics and redesigned interior give it an edge in the competitive midsized three-row SUV segment. Fuel prices are going up nationwide, so we share some tips on how to maximize your car's fuel economy. Other topics include whether switching between premium and regular fuel may damage a car's engine, should Tesla disabling advanced safety features in some of its vehicles keep drivers from purchasing a Model 3 or Model Y, how to properly charge an electric vehicle to optimize its battery life, and we feature responses we received from our audience about their favorite cars they wish they still owned.
