One of the primary questions drivers have about EVs is how long do their batteries last, and how much would a replacement cost in the future. We share our expert information on if electric car batteries are expensive to replace, as well as: where more expensive tires wear slower than cheaper alternatives; why a car in Europe might have a better warranty or more features than its US counterpart; warranty coverage for 48V mild hybrid batteries; whether standard, gas-powered vehicles lose range in cold weather like all-electric cars; and how to change the radio station preset on the 2023 Honda CR-V.
SHOW NOTES ----------------------------------- 00:00 - Introduction 00:45 - Question #1: Are EV batteries expensive to replace? 05:11 - Question #2: Why does it seem that European countries have better car warranties and features than the US? 09:14 - Question #3: How can you tell whether a tire will retain good performance over the its life? 12:40 - Question #4: What are the warranty coverages like for 48V mild hybrid batteries? 17:06 - Question #5: Is the drop in range on an EV in cold weather about the same as gas-powered vehicles? 22:10 - Question #6: Is it possible to delete a radio station preset from the favorites list on a 2023 Honda CR-V?

Nissan draws from its 50-plus-year history in resurrecting the Z, a sports car that the automaker calls "all-new" (but is it though??) We debate the provenance of this iteration of the Z, as well as share our first impressions of its performance, interior, and what you might lose by opting for the automatic transmission. We also debate which is the ultimate driving machine: the BMW M550i xDrive, or the Mercedes-Benz AMG E53.

This week we share our first impressions of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross; how it drove on our track, its long roster of advanced safety features, and who this small SUV might appeal to. With major flooding affecting many parts of the country, we discuss all the ways water can damage a car, and give tips on how to spot and avoid a waterlogged vehicle when buying a used car. Other topics this week include: what is the difference between a vehicle refresh and redesign; if bright LED daytime running lights can cause drivers to not turn on their car's headlights; why EVs seem to have less space for tall drivers; and how Consumer Reports decides which vehicles to buy for our test program, and what happens to our cars after testing is completed.

We share our first impressions of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, discussing its performance on our track, and how it stacks up to competitors like the Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, and Honda Pilot. We preview the newly announced 2023 Nissan Z, including its highly anticipated 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 engine. Chevrolet has expanded its battery recall on the Bolt EV and EUV models, and what owners should do to stay safe until a fix is available. We also share audience feedback on their "Forever" car choices; whether the rapid speed of improvements will leave current electric vehicle shoppers with outdated battery technology; if that "new car smell" is toxic (and how to get rid of it if it's not for you); the safest way to change wheel sizes on a car; and which Toyota RAV4 is the best choice for a driving enthusiast.

This week we review GM's automated driving enhanced Super Cruise system, tested on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade we purchased for our test program, and discuss how it compares to the previous version, as well as competitors like Tesla's Autopilot. With the arrival of summer and temperatures rising across the US, we share tips on how to keep your family safe and cool your car quickly. We also share how to keep kids occupied during long road trips; whether older, rare cars like the Chevrolet SSR could lack replacement parts as it gets older; what to do to prevent dirt, bugs, and other debris from disabling your car's camera-based safety systems; and how the massive chip shortage might affect the build quality of 2022 model year vehicles.

On this week's episode, we talk about the redesigned 2022 Honda Civic, and share our first impressions on its driving characteristics, styling, and comfort. Ford has announced an all-new small pickup, the Maverick, and we discuss how it might fit into a market dominated by oversized vehicles. We also give a glimpse into our headlight testing at the track, and how halogen lights compare to LEDs. Other topics include why a truck's hood height can pose a risk to pedestrians and drivers of smaller cars; proper oil change intervals for short commutes; whether a new car that sat on a dealer's lot for months may have a risk of 'lot rot;' if turning off the A/C in a car saves gas; and our experts predict which modern cars will become classics in the future.

This week we talk about our test results of the 2021 Kia Sorento: how it handled on our track, as a family car, and how it compares to others in its class, such as the Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride. We also talk to CR investigative reporter Ryan Felton about his findings regarding an RV and camper tire made by Goodyear that has been linked to numerous crashes and deaths, and offers advice on how to identify an old tire, and when they must be replaced. We also cover whether a dealer can terminate the manufacturer's warranty on a vehicle if it is not serviced by the dealership, if recalls are signs of a car to avoid, or indicate a responsible automaker, and how safe are 3rd row seats in modern cars.

![]() We recently welcomed the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray into our test fleet, and we share our first impressions on its driving dynamics, styling, and interior drawbacks. Also, with Corvette always giving buyers more performance per dollar than other automakers, we compare how this first ever mid-engine Corvette compares to other, more exotic sports cars, like Ferraris and Lamborghinis. We also discuss whether Rivian's new Adventure charging network will accommodate other manufacturer's EVs, or be proprietary like Tesla Superchargers. Other topics include: which SUV is best suited for an adventurous family; is it wise to replace original larger wheels on a vehicle with a smaller size; and if a Smart car is capable of towing.

We also share our test results of the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, discuss the scarcity of the Kia Telluride, if owners are able to replace LED daytime running lights on their own, a smart maintenance schedule for a car driven 4 miles a day in an urban environment, and why new cars aren't as inexpensive as the Ford Model T was in the 1920s.

We share our first impressions of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, discussing how much this 4th-generation compact SUV has evolved, and if it is a worthy competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Also, Hyundai has unveiled its all-new compact pickup-truck this week, the 2022 Santa Cruz, and we discuss where this tiny truck fits within the pickup segment, and which demographic Hyundai is targeting. This week's topics also include whether retreading tires is a greener choice than purchasing new ones; which key features to consider when purchasing a vehicle for a hot climate; and how often cars get damaged at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center.

This week we drove the all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, and we share our first impressions on the interior styling, and how it handled on our track. Rivian, the fledgling electric truck and SUV nameplate, just announced a plan to install EV chargers at places known for outdoor recreation: state parks and campsites. We talk about how this plan differentiates it from other automakers, and whether it's enough to stand out in a market dominated by Tesla. We also discuss the potential resale value of gas-powered cars in a future that could be dominated by hybrids, why cars from different brands that share a parent company might have a big difference in quality, and the best way to judge a car for long-term comfort during a test drive.

This week we rented the 2022 Kia Carnival, and share our first impressions on its unique styling, utility, driving dynamics, and how it compares to the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Pacifica. We also examine why people are spending more on new vehicles, and what is driving the average car prices so high. We also discuss whether it is wise to sell an older vehicle and purchase a brand new one; if panoramic sunroofs are less safe in a rollover crash; when to consider purchasing an extended warranty on a new car; and which safety features are a must when exploring a conversion van build #VanLife.

This week we give our first impressions of the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe, sharing how it performed on our track, interior comfort and quality, and where it fits into Hyundai's crowded SUV family. We also share how recent testing at the Consumer Reports test track discovered issues with the 2021 Hyundai Elantra and 2021 Toyota Sienna, and how each automaker responded to our findings to fix these vehicles. And our humble podcast has been on the road for over 8 years, beginning in March 2013, so to celebrate our 300th episode, we feature predictions from the Talking Cars audience about what we'll be discussing 8 years from now, covering the future of electric vehicles, infrastructure, self-driving and autonomous cars, and more! :59 - issues CR discovered while testing Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Sienna 7:20 - 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe First Impressions 13:43 - Episode 300 reflections; what our audience thinks we will be discussing for our next 300 episodes! ----------------------------------- Subscribe to Talking Cars on Apple Podcasts! This week we discuss whether you should always trust a dealer's advice on maintenance intervals; if seat protector mats are safe to use with child seats; if purchasing a used CR recommended vehicle with high mileage is a wise choice; tips for negotiating a car lease, and if asking to have an independent mechanic check a certified pre-owned car is an automotive faux pas.

The Bronco name is back, and this week we share our first impressions on the all-new 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, catering to those looking for a rugged, off-road capable vehicle. We discuss how the small SUV, sibling of the larger Bronco, handles rocks and mud, as well as its engine performance and interior comfort. Chevrolet announced an updated version of its all-electric Bolt and an all-new Bolt EUV. We discuss the key changes for the Bolt EV, and how the inclusion of GM's Super Cruise active driving assistance system might appeal to those interested in Tesla's Autopilot system. We also talk about the right time to cut your losses on a vehicle that needs constant repairs, if Consumer Reports is considering testing 3-wheeled BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle) like Arcimoto and Aptera, why all-weather tires are not as popular as all-seasons, and we wonder which of our neighbors lost their emu.

This week we discuss the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E all-electric SUV, sharing our first impressions on the driving dynamics, the screen-dominated interior, and if we think it is worthy of the Mustang badge. Tesla recently unveiled big changes to its Model S sedan and Model X SUV, introducing a yoke-style steering wheel, and foregoing turn signal and gear selector stalks in favor of touch capacitive buttons and screen controls. We speculate what these changes will mean for drivers, and touch on other EV-related topics, including maintaining electric vehicle battery health, if electric cars wear out tires faster than a traditional vehicle, and what all this new technology means for auto reliability.

We recently purchased a new 2021 Hyundai Elantra for the Consumer Reports auto testing program, and we share our first impressions on the performance, infotainment, and styling of this small sedan. We also discuss why many modern cars seem to lack a traditional bumper, and why the cost of minor dings and fender benders can be surprisingly expensive. We also discuss the role a tire's sidewall can play in ride comfort, recent government reports regarding booster seat weight limits and how they impact CR's testing, and if a car from Alaska could have any issues at its new home in Florida.

We recently rented a BMW M440i xDrive, and this week we give our first impressions of how this sporty coupe performed on the highway and at our track. We also offer advice on whether you should skip test drives due to COVID-19, if an Audi Q3 or Volvo XC40 is better for a city-dweller, the performance of winter run-flat tires, why some cars in Canada and Europe never make it to the US, and why importing a foreign car might be prohibitively expensive.

This week we discuss our initial impressions of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA, sharing our experience with the controls, ride comfort, and cargo space of this luxury small SUV. We also discuss if expensive wiper blades perform better than cheaper alternatives; the differences between winter and mud terrain tires, and whether mud tires are safe for driving in the ice and snow of wintry weather; if a recall on the Subaru Ascent will affect its CR reliability score; and we share tips on the best way to keep dogs, cats, and any other pets safe in your vehicle.

Every year, Consumer Reports releases the results of its auto reliability survey, collecting data from hundreds of thousands of our members. We share the process of collecting this data, as well as some highlights from this year's results. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a recent addition to our test program, and we share our first impressions on this resurrected and rugged luxury off-roader SUV. We also answer questions about NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) shields on cars, possible solutions to end a burdensome car lease, and at what point a child can safely ride in a vehicle without a booster seat.

The 2021 Chevy Suburban is one of the latest additions to our testing fleet, and we give our first impressions on what it’s like to drive this big SUV, both on the open road, as well as in urban environments. The subscription model is common with many services these days, yet is still fairly uncommon in the automotive world. However, recent announcements by Tesla and GM may change this, and could introduce the concept of charging a monthly fee for access to important safety features. We talk about how these programs will work, and why they might not be in the best interest of consumers. We also discuss the long-term reliability of turbos and direct-injection vehicles, the best way to store your winter or summer tires, and if a dealership might allow you to learn to drive a manual transmission with one of their vehicles (spoiler alert: probably not.)

We touch on a number of topics this week, including if a used Subaru Ascent is a good replacement for an Audi A4, why your infotainment system might not play nice with your Apple iPhone or Android phone, the right way to tie down an object to your roof, and how Consumer Reports headlight testing differs from that of IIHS. We also discuss routine maintenance that is unique to EVs, why an automatic emergency braking system might give a driver false positives, how car designs might be affected with a move to "skateboard" or modular architectures, using a child seat with an inflatable seat belt, and why you might not be able to tow a hybrid vehicle behind your RV.

This week we give our first impressions of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and talk about how it compares to the last outgoing model, and why this small SUV might have created a new size category for Chevy. Consumer Reports has teamed up with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (or IIHS for short) to recommend safe, reliable used cars and SUVs that are well-suited for teenage drivers, and cost $20k or less; our panel explains why this is an important market for buyers today, and which cars they would choose off the list. Also, we help a viewer decide between a new Toyota Venza hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Prime to replace his high-mileage Toyota Highlander, explain why all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles require all four tires to be changed at the same time, and pick a car we think would be perfect for a long trip to Mars.

This week we share our test results of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and discuss if the compact luxury SUV retains the swagger the brand is known for. Also, Ford has unveiled its brand new Bronco for 2021! We run through all the specs, pricing, the numerous trim levels (with names like Black Diamond, Badlands, and Sasquatch!) and talk about the nostalgia that the Bronco name plate brings. We wrap up with audience questions about retrofitting your vehicle with wireless Apple CarPlay, whether buying a plug-in hybrid like the Toyota RAV4 Prime is a good buy if you don't have access to a charging station, replacements for a college graduate's Hyundai Elantra (SUV or pickup truck?), and how to start a career in the automotive journalism industry.

This week we share our first impressions of the 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and how it stacks up against the standard version. We also discuss why fuel economy numbers in small and compact cars don't seem to be improving at the rate of larger vehicles, whether someone entering the auto industry should forego an education in conventional cars in favor of electric vehicle (EV) specialization, and learn all about Jake's abundant tomato garden in his remote workplace.

We share our full road test results of the all-new 2021 Kia Seltos. Suddenly an 8-point deer jumps in front of my car! The airbags go off, the hood wraps around the windshield, and my 2004 Infiniti is totaled. Would modern pre-collision braking or pedestrian detection have prevented this accident? Are these systems designed to respond to large animals in the same way they would respond to a person? 25:33 - Question #3: How frequently does IIHS test for existing model year automobiles? Some cars haven't been updated in years, and I wonder if manufacturers improve crash safety for existing models. |

(The only car I would not buy is the Supra.) But why did you not choose at least one Porsche, Genesis or Mazda in your Top Picks? I personally believe the Genesis G80 and Mazda 3 are really good buys. 18:18 - Question #2: Steve | West Chester, PA; I'd love to buy a car from an American brand, like Ford or Chevrolet. However, my own experience, and your reliability rankings tell me that these cars will typically be much less reliable. Reliability and longevity are the top criteria for me. How can American nameplates have such poor reliability year after year? Why aren't they learning how to do this? They are keeping away those of us who don't want to spend money on repairs or spend our time at the dealership. 20:39 - Question #3: Ray | Henderson, NV; Many of the newest cars, including my Audi A6, have a sport or dynamic drive mode. This seems to increase the RPMs in the vehicle, and I was wondering if it’s safe to keep the car in this mode at all times. Does it affect engine or transmission reliability? Thanks for the service you provide, and shout out to the crew, especially the 2 Mikes!
